Gary Soto's Kitchen Designs

Here are my current designs for a kitchen based off of Gary Soto's writings. Hopefully I'll have time to back and make some more adjustments later. I like the mood I got in each piece though.

Late Summer Days

Here are a few pastels and a painting I did recently. The first pastel I did on a beach up North near Eureka. The other two I did around town.

Garbage and the County Fair

Due to my decision to devote most of my free time to studying figure drawing, I sadly haven't been outside to sketch much. However, I do venture into the heat occasionally and here is a 10 minute pastel sketch and a couple drawings from the county fair.

Diner Sketches

My goal this summer is to draw enough so that I have enough good drawings to update my blog every week. It's turning out to be every other week or so... but I'm doing a good amount of studies so I will forgive myself for now. Here are some sketches from a 24 hour diner for you.

Mountain Air

So I finally broke away from paint last week and brought my dusty pastels up into the mountains. I've always loved pastels but haven't much time to experiment with them. Pastel is harder than it looks so my percentage of "post-able" pieces wasn't that high, but here are the good ones.

This one I had the most time for because the light wasn't changing too fast. I did this at about 10am.


I got some great advice to try painting the same place at different times of day to see how the light changes. So, I did the same location at sunset and found the colors to be much brighter and darker than before. The shadows are much harsher also. I didn't have as much time for this piece though.


Cool thunderstorm clouds at sunset. Got a good lightening storm later that night out of them.


This was on the drive to LA before we went up camping. It was the beginning of the pastel experiments so it's not technically great, but I like the overall feeling of it.

A Story About Hair

Alright, I think I'm finally emerging from a mini hibernation period that was much needed to recuperate from the semester. Here is my final film from Art 115. It was about 40 seconds longer than the the 30 sec suggested time so it was a tough cookie to finish off. However, alas it is done! Enjoy...

I also have some pastels I did on a recent camping trip that I want to get posted but I have to scan those first. Lots more posts coming this summer I hope so stay tunned...

The Cherry Tree

Hooray for spring break! I celebrated today by finally doing a plain air painting! And boy does it smell good to be outside... Anyways, I haven't painted in quite a while but I think it came out kinda cool looking despite my rustiness.
